I’m determined not to use my oven this summer, which means I’m getting cozy with my air fryer! If you’ve never made Air Fryer Steaks, you’re in for a treat. You can get that same juicy steak with a crunchy exterior without a grill and just a little oil, salt, and pepper.

If you love easy air fryer recipes, you have to try my crispy air fryer chicken breast, fish filets in the air fryer, air fryer buffalo chicken wings, and these easy air fryer jalapeño poppers.

Why You’ll Love this Recipe

  1. This simple steak recipe is so full of flavor with almost no effort! Let the beef be the star with a simple seasoning and no marinating time.
  2. If you’re looking for an easy recipe that’s ready in less than 20 minutes, this is it! There’s no spice rub to make or complicated directions here.
  3. Skip the restaurant for your next date night with this buttery steak that’s just like a steakhouse for way less!

Ingredients Used

Complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

  • Beef steaks: I usually use about 1-inch thick ribeyes for this recipe, but any steak will do! If using a different cut of beef, be sure to check the internal temp for your perfect doneness.
  • Olive oil: Oil is one of the most important ingredients in this air fried steak recipe! It helps keep the seasonings on the steak, and it helps the ribeye not stick to the air fryer basket.
  • Salt and pepper: I keep my steak seasonings simple with a generous pinch of salt and pepper. You can always add your favorite steak rub if you want, too.

How to Make Steaks in the Air Fryer

Follow these steps for the best air fryer steaks:

Tip!

For the most perfect steak, leave the steaks on the counter while you prep. This helps them cook more evenly and avoid that cold center!

  1. Preheat air fryer. First, prep all your ingredients and preheat the air fryer to 400°F/200°C. If your air fryer doesn’t have a preheat button, simply run it for a few minutes. I also like to let my steaks sit at room temperature for a more even cook.
  2. Season steaks. Then, cover the steaks in olive oil on all sides and season with salt and pepper.
  3. Air fry steaks. When the air fryer is preheated, put the steaks in the basket and air fry for about 12 minutes, flipping halfway through cook time for a medium steak.
  4. Rest and serve. Once the steaks are cooked to your perfect doneness, let them rest a few minutes before serving. Top with a pat of garlic herb butter for the most delicious air fryer steak!

Tips and Tricks

If you’re new to making steaks in the air fryer, here’s some tips to nail it every time:

  • Bring steaks to room temperature. This may sound dangerous, but it helps the steaks cook faster in the center! When you’re prepping dinner, take out your steaks and let them sit on the counter for about 20 minutes to half an hour.
  • Add more flavor. This is a super simple steak recipe that is perfectly juicy and flavorful every time. However, if you want more flavor, use a marinade or more garlic and herbs! I’ve also used compound butter for even more buttery flavor, too.
  • Make it for meal prep. This steak recipe is so quick and easy to use for your weekly meal prep! You can add steak to salads, tacos, veggie bowls, and so much more. Luckily, it will last all week in the fridge.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to cook steak in the air fryer?

Cooking a steak in the air fryer is faster than grilled steaks! For a medium rare steak, you want to air fry it for about 10 minutes. Keep in mind: Steak temps will rise about 5 degrees while resting.

Can you put raw meat in the air fryer?

Absolutely! Always oil your raw meat or veggies to keep them from sticking to the air fryer tray or basket. Also, be sure to clean the basket when you’re done to keep everything sanitary for the next meal.

Why do they put butter on steak?

Everything’s better with a little butter, and steak is no exception! I like to add a little garlic herb butter to all my steaks, whether I make them in the cast iron skillet, on the grill, or in the air fryer! It adds a little extra richness to the meat and can help soften an extra charred exterior.

What to Serve with Air Fryer Steak

Keep the stovetop off with side dishes such as: Grilled Veggie Kabobs, Air Fryer Roasted Potatoes, Air Fryer Vegetables, or Instant Pot Broccoli.

Have a low-carb night with a simple steak salad filled with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and a homemade Asian salad dressing. Iceberg Wedge Salad is also delicious with steak.

Make it a hearty meal with Dairy-Free Mashed Potatoes or baked potato wedges.

Enjoy it for date night with a glass of red wine and Oreo Tiramisu.

Store any leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days. You can pre-slice leftover air fried steak for your meal prep lunches or salads, too!

FAQs

How do you cook a steak in an air fryer without it drying out? ›

The best way to ensure a juicy steak is to use high heat to cook the steak quickly, which will bring it to the proper temperature without drying it out. Remember to rest your steak after air frying to allow the meat to reabsorb juices and complete its cooking time without direct heat.

Do I need to flip my steak in the air fryer? ›

Your steak will cook through, if left on just one side. However, because flipping can place a different part of the steak closer to the heating element (for an air fryer, this is at the top), a steak will cook more evenly if flipped halfway through.

What setting is best for steak in air fryer? ›

Making beef tenderloin in the air fryer is also a must for my steak lovers! What is this? I have found that 400 degrees Fahrenheit is the perfect temperature to cook steak in the air fryer, for an 8-ounce ribeye, it will take 12 minutes, and remember to flip halfway through.

What is the most tender cut of steak for air fryer? ›

what type of beef is best in the air fryer. As with all dry-heat cooker methods (grilling, broiling, pan frying and oven roasting), tender beef cuts perform best in the air fryer. Those cuts include Top Sirloin, KC Strip, Ribeye, Tenderloin and Tri Tip. Ground beef also can be easily prepared in an air fryer.

Do I put oil on steak before air frying? ›

Get the Recipe

Pat them dry with a paper towel to remove any excess moisture. Season both sides generously. Let the steaks sit for 15-20 minutes to allow the flavors to penetrate the meat. To prevent the steaks from sticking to the air fryer basket, lightly grease it with olive oil or cooking spray.

What temperature do you cook steak in the air fryer? ›

Preheat a 3.5-quart air fryer to 400 degrees F. Season the steak on both sides with a generous pinch of salt and several grinds of black pepper. Place the steak in the center of the air fryer basket and cook until desired doneness, about 10 minutes for medium-rare, 12 minutes for medium and 14 minutes for medium-well.

Do steaks brown in air fryer? ›

An air fryer will brown, but it will take longer and therefore will be more likely to dry the meat. A quick sear in a hot pan does a better job, and does it more expediently, which is key, as it is much less likely to dry out.

What to season steak with? ›

There are many spices available for seasoning a steak, with salt and pepper topping the list. However, other spices, like thyme, rosemary, garlic powder, and minced onion, are also good options to enhance your steak's flavor. Or, use a one-and-done approach with Chicago Steak Seasoning.

Is it better to cook a ribeye steak in the air fryer or pan? ›

Thicker steaks are ideal for air frying because they allow more time for the outside to get color and crispness without overcooking the inside. Select ribeye steaks with good marbling, too, for ideal juiciness.

Why is my steak chewy in air fryer? ›

Don't use steaks that are less than an inch in thickness. Thin steaks are prone to overcooking quickly and becoming chewy. To enjoy the best flavor and texture, allow the steaks to come to room temperature for at least 30 minutes before cooking them in the air fryer.

How do you sear and finish steak in an air fryer? ›

Place the steak on the air fryer tray and close the fryer. Allow it to cook for about three minutes and then flip the steak to the other side, allowing it to get a good sear on each side. Cook for another three minutes, or until the steak reaches your desired level of doneness.

How do you heat a medium rare steak in an air fryer? ›

Allow your steak to come to room temperature (about 30 minutes on the counter). Preheat the Air Fryer to 350°F. Place the steak into the Air Fryer basket to reheat the steak; check every 2 minutes. The cook time will depend on steak thickness, so ensure the internal temperature reaches around 110°F–130°F.

What is the best cut of steak that isn't chewy? ›

Top sirloin

Despite being boneless, this cut, which comes from the cow's top rear end, is typically far more soft and tasty. It rarely becomes extremely chewy and rubbery when cooked properly. Even though it is less expensive than some of the more expensive steaks, this steak is still excellent.

Can you put foil in an air fryer? ›

The great news about air fryers is that you can use foil along with parchment paper to cook your food in an air fryer. Just remember that if it's safe and effective to use in a conventional oven, it will work just fine in an air fryer.

How do you keep meat from drying out in an air fryer? ›

Use Tinfoil As A Tool

Another tip that can help keep meats from losing moisture is to protect them with a physical barrier from the dry heat of the air fryer. Using tinfoil helps keep moisture locked in and around the meat, preventing over-evaporation.

Is steak better in the oven or air fryer? ›

High heat is the best for cooking steak, because the less time it spends cooking, the more tender it will be. That makes the air fryer GREAT for cooking steak (and Air Fryer Hamburgers).

Is steak better in air fryer or pan? ›

When cooking steak on a pan, oil and fat splatter all around, which can be a pain to clean. The air fryer contains all of the splatter within the device. So, for less experienced cooks, the air fryer perfectly crisps the outside of the steak, which is sometimes more difficult to achieve on the pan or grill.

Is steak better pan fried or air fryer? ›

This depends on personal preference. The pan-seared steak will have a nice crust and charred flavour, while air-fried steak will be more evenly cooked and have a slightly different texture.
