In lieu of Mangia Mondays:: Spread The Love (1)

In the wake of the Newtown tragedy I found it unfathomable to think about what recipe I was going to post for Mangia Monday. My heart was so heavy all weekend as the details of the events unfolded and those beautiful little faces were splashed across the news. I hope you will hang with me today even though I am taking the week off from chatting about food.

Last night I decided that if those children were my own, I would want them remembered not for how their life ended, but for the joy and love and light they were and are. If I were one of the adults that lost their lives trying to protect the students, I would want goodness to come out of the heartbreak.

Children remind us to treasure the smallest of gifts, even in the most difficult times.

-Allen Klein

While none of us can take away the grief of their families or the the horror witnessed by all the kids, staff and responders at Sandy Hook Elementary school, we are not helpless.

No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.

In this season of love, in the names of the twenty children and six adults who lost their lives at Sandy Hook Elementary School, my kids and I are going to try to commit 26 random acts of kindness.

Will you join us and spread some love to even one person?

To give pleasure to a single heart by a single act is better than a thousand heads bowing in prayer.

This is our humble list, compiled from ideas of random acts of kindness from all over the web and my kids’ own creative minds. We whittled it down to 26, one act for each of the children and adults at Sandy Hook. We are so excited to put our plan into action everyday this week, starting this afternoon after school. If you have other ideas would you please share them?

For our anonymous acts, we’ll leave a note. You’re welcome to print these and use them too! (save the picture to your computer and then print.)

And Mangia Mondays friends, don’t underestimate the power of a nice meal or sweet treat to bring joy to someone you love, a friend, a neighbor or even a stranger! Thank you to everyone who participates in Mangia Mondays and shares wonderful recipes week after week.

If there is any kindness I can show, any good thing I can do to any fellow human being, let me do it now, and not defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again.

Lisa – this is such a WONDERFUL idea! I am going to send a link from my blog to yours to spread the word. I was very brief in explaining the tragedy to my 8 year old and we haven't told my 6 year old yet. I guess I will see what happens at school today. Thank you for being such an inspiration!

you are such a wonderful person, and mother to teach your children about kindness in this way.
I'm going to attempt to do as many as these as I can as well.

Fabulous idea! Love that you had the kids involved and these are so simple and something we can do everyday not just during the Holidays! Thanks for making us think outside the box and look to others not ourselves. We have enjoyed bringing the bell ringers hot chocolate, something simple but when it's cold outside it is nice to show them some love.
