What are the ingredients to make this Easy Sweet Spicy Air Fryer Salmon?

The 6 ingredients I used are:

  1. Salmon fillets (I used salmon fillets with the skin on, but you can use skinless as well – only reduce the time to 10 minutes when air frying),
  2. Coriander,
  3. Turmeric,
  4. Chili powder,
  5. Chili flakes,
  6. Honey,

And don’t forget the salt and pepper to taste as well.

Last Christmas I received a fantastic gift of an Air Fryer from The Feed Feed.

Then, earlier this month, I received another one to host a giveaway with.

That’s 1 too many air fryers taking up valuable real estate on my countertops!

Well, being surrounded by air fryers meant only one thing for my daughter and I – and that was to use them! Right?!

We had just moved to our new home and instead of waiting for the oven to preheat and then take 30+ minutes to bake whatever was on the agenda for dinner, I opted to use the air fryer.

Fish and Chips that normally took 40-45 minutes to make, were ready in less than 20 minutes!

Crispy chicken tenders were ready in 15 minutes!

Cake… err… I dunno, I haven’t tried using my air fryer for desserts… at least… not yet!

What I have tried often has been several versions of salmon.

Breaded salmon, blackened spicy salmon, turmeric salmon, and, today, this Easy Sweet Spicy Air Fryer Salmon.

Air Fryer Settings that worked for me:

I’ve experimented with different temperature settings as well as varied times while using my air fryer, and, what seems to work best for me is a temperature setting of 400 degrees Fahrenheit with the salmon being cooked for 10-11 minutes.

At this temp and time, the salmon is beautifully crispy on the top, and well done on the inside, yet tender.

Now, at these settings, a slightly thick salmon steak works best – and by that I mean a raw salmon steak that is at least ¾ inch to 1 inch thick.

A raw salmon steak that is thinner than that will turn out a lot dryer at these settings – yup, I found that out the hard way!

If you are using a thinner salmon fillet, then cooking it at 390 degrees for 8-9 minutes should give you a deliciously cooked salmon fillet.

What if the salmon is frozen?

While you can easily air fry frozen salmon using the settings above, I choose to thaw out the frozen salmon (like I did in this recipe) and use it. That way the spices adhere to the salmon a lot better than when air frying frozen salmon.

For this Easy Sweet Spicy Air Fryer Salmon, I used a mix of warmed honey, inflammation-reducing turmeric, chili powder, coriander and chili flakes.

The chili powder and chili flakes added a nice little kick to the salmon while the honey added in a tinge of sweetness to tone the spicy down a tad.

Ingredients

  • 3 1- inch thick salmon fillets
  • 1 1/2 tsp coriander
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tbsp chili flakes
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/8 tsp each salt and pepper

Instructions

  • Place honey in a microwave-safe dish and heat for 10 seconds until slightly warm.

  • Add in the turmeric, coriander, chili powder, salt, pepper, and chili flakes into the warmed honey and mix very well until all are incorporated.

  • Wash and pat dry the salmon fillets. When salmon fillets are dry, spoon on the honey-chili mixture onto each, making sure to coat the sides as well (this is messy and you will have to wash your air-fryer pan).

  • Then, place the salmon fillets in an air fryer, set temperature to 400 degrees and time to 10-11 minutes. When time is up, remove salmon fillets and enjoy with your favorite sides.

FAQs

Does salmon need to be flipped in the air fryer? ›

"You don't have to flip the salmon, which you do in most other cooking techniques because it does cook so quickly." Depending on the thickness of your fillet, air fryer salmon only takes about 10 minutes to cook, landing itself a spot on the easy weeknight dinners list.

Should salmon be skin up or down in air fryer? ›

-You do not need to remove the skin before cooking. Air fry the salmon with the skin side down, on the bottom. -You do not need to flip the salmon while cooking. -For seasoning you can use any combination of salt, pepper, garlic powder, garlic salt, seasoning salt, Italian seasoning, cayenne, or a seasoning mix.

How do you cook salmon in an air fryer without it sticking? ›

Brush with Oil

Salmon is a fatty fish (remember, those fats are good-for-you-fats!) and therefore doesn't need a lot of oil, but I do brush the salmon fillets lightly, and mostly on the skin side so that it doesn't stick to the surface of the air fryer basket.

How to air fry already cooked salmon? ›

Step 2: Preheat the airfryer to 180°C (350°F). What is this? Step 3: Place olive oil and a little bit of water on your fish. Step 4: Place in the air fryer and cook for 4-5 minutes or until the internal temperature is 145°F (63°C).

How long should salmon be in air fryer? ›

Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (if yours has a preheat option)! Rub each fillet with olive oil and season with the seasoning blend. Place the salmon in the air fryer and air fry for 7-9 minutes, this will depend on the thickness of the salmon. Open basket and check for desired doneness with a fork.

Can you put aluminum foil in an air fryer? ›

Foil is safe to use in an air fryer so long as you follow three basic rules: never let foil touch the heating element; make sure the foil is weighted so it doesn't blow around the basket; and avoid contact with acidic ingredients, which can cause the foil to leach onto your food.

Can you put tin foil in air fryer? ›

The great news about air fryers is that you can use foil along with parchment paper to cook your food in an air fryer. Just remember that if it's safe and effective to use in a conventional oven, it will work just fine in an air fryer.

Can you use parchment paper in an air fryer? ›

Yes, and here's what you need to know. Parchment paper is a safe and effective liner to use in the air fryer. To avoid safety hazards, weigh down the paper with food and keep away from the heating element. Parchment paper can be heated up to roughly 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

Why does my salmon turn white in air fryer? ›

Albumin is a liquid protein that solidifies when the fish is cooked, seeping out as the muscle fibers contract under heat, becoming thick and a bright white.

What is the white stuff on air fry salmon? ›

That white gunk seeping from your salmon is called albumin. It's a protein—not fat—that pushes to the surface of the fish when you heat it. "Once this protein reaches temperatures between 140 and 150 degrees, its moisture is squeezed out, and it congeals and turns white," according to America's Test Kitchen.

How do I make sure salmon doesn't stick to foil? ›

Before placing the fish on the baking sheet, brush the paper or foil with neutral oil for an instant nonstick surface. McCue is also a fan of steaming fish inside a packet of parchment paper in the oven—a French technique known as en papillote.

How do I know when salmon is done frying? ›

No radiation needed here. The easiest way to see if your salmon has finished cooking is to gently press down on the top of the fillet with a fork or your finger. If the flesh of the salmon flakes—meaning, it separates easily along the white lines that run across the fillet (strips of fish fat)—it's finished cooking.

What temperature do you cook salmon? ›

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Season salmon with salt and pepper. Place salmon, skin side down, on a non-stick baking sheet or in a non-stick pan with an oven-proof handle. Bake until salmon is cooked through, about 12 to 15 minutes.

Does food need to be flipped in an air fryer? ›

6. SHAKE OR FLIP FOOD. Most air fryers require you to shake the basket at least once during the air fry process to ensure every bit is crisped and browned to perfection. Some recipes call for flipping or shaking every 5 minutes, so don't stray too far from your air fryer while cooking.

Do you flip salmon on both sides? ›

You do not have to flip salmon when grilling. If you prefer grill marks on both sides of your fish, place salmon on oiled, heated grill. Once the salmon releases itself from the grates, flip gently using a wide spatula.

Do you flip salmon halfway through? ›

Add salmon skin-side down and let cook 6 to 8 minutes, or until the bottom half of the fish looks opaque and the skin easily releases from the grill. Flip and cook 4 to 6 minutes longer, or until the entirety of the fish is cooked through.

How long before you flip salmon? ›

Let the salmon cook on the first side completely undisturbed until the flesh appears cooked about 3/4 of the way up the fillet, about 5 to 6 minutes. With a fish spatula or similar long, wide, flexible spatula, carefully flip the fillets.
